Get to know me a little better
It was love that saw Sophie move to Liverpool in 2008. Following her then partner, now wife to the then capital of culture, she left behind her life in the East Midlands. Quitting her job as a graphic designer, Sophie jumped at the chance to go freelance and has never looked back.
Embracing the city, its culture and herself, it’s no surprise that so much of Sophie’s work is a love letter to Liverpool. It’s where she found her style and began to live her life on her terms.
This strength and independence emanates from Sophie’s work. Covering queer themes, exploring Liverpool and its architecture, celebrating animals and the environment, and sharing positive messages of love and protest. This wide-ranging celebration of community has seen Sophie become the go-to artist for inclusive and uplifting work.
Her distinctly illustrative, vibrant style recently adorned a custom piano as part of Liverpool One’s Tickle the Ivories trial, celebrating music within the retail space. The same space that saw some of her anti-homophobia billboards displayed as part of the Liverpool City Region x Homotopia campaign to celebrate LGBTQ+ peoples. Sharing accessible messages like “an ally is for life not just for pride” and “your life, your love, your rules”.
Her career as an artist has allowed her to expand her activity as an LGBTQ+ activist. Working alongside Homotopia as a mentor to fellow Liverpool-based artist Rosa Kusabbi; organising pride banner workshops with young queer people; starting a drawing club with upcycler Gemma Longworth; hosting trans meet ups in MerseyMade. Sophie’s work within the community and for local charities is never ending, because without people and purpose, Sophie’s work wouldn’t have the same vibrancy.
Sophie has exhibited her work in Cass Art, Victoria Gallery, Everyman Theatre and Artists Club and has been commissioned by the likes of Wild in Art, Victoria Art Gallery, Ancestry, Alder Hey Hospital and Liverpool John Moores University. Producing brochures, decorating elaborate sculptures, commemorating historical events and more.
As her notability as an artist continues to grow, Sophie’s work continues to reach far off shores, with shops around the country and overseas stocking her work wholesale, and big collaborations on the horizon, everything is on an upwards trajectory, as always.
