Sophie's Sheroes: Lili Elbe
Both Lili and her wife Gerda Gottlieb were successful artists, Lili (formally Einar Wegener) painted landscapes, and Gerda worked as an illustrator. Lili was ‘born’ when one of Gerda’s models failed to show for a sitting and became the subject of many paintings and the artist became the muse. She lived her life in the streets of Paris before finding the medical help she needed, at a time when there would have been such little information for her condition, Lili is recognised as a pioneer, believed to be the first person to undergo gender reassignment.
