Sophie Green joins the mass art extravaganza ‘Marwell’s Zany Zebras’
Sophie Green’s zebra design ‘Skittles’ selected from hundreds of others to be brought to life for a giant art trail. Skittles will be on show in Palmerston Park, Southampton, Hampshire, for ten weeks this summer, when the city becomes home to a herd of colourful zebra sculptures.
In addition to this a trail of replica miniature Marwell’s Zany Zebras will be hidden within Marwell Zoo itself. The public art event promises to create an unforgettable trail for families to enjoy whilst raising much needed funds for critically endangered animals. The Grevy’s zebra is the fastest declining land mammal in Kenya and their survival is vital to the whole ecosystem. It is hoped the trail raises awareness about the plight of Grevy’s zebra and other endangered animals.
Working from her studio-gallery in Hanover Street in Liverpool city centre, local artist Sophie Green has created a zebra with the working title of ‘Carousel’, inspired by the classic style of the fairground attraction. Sponsored by house builders Foreman Homes group, ‘Carousel’ is produced using the colours from the flags of the Grevy’s zebra’s native Ethiopia and Kenya. Sophie was recently named 'one to watch' as part of the Independent on Sunday's Rainbow List and is no stranger to painting on a big scale! In 2014 Sophie designed and painted one of 12 snowflake sculptures, placed at key locations around Liverpool, helping to transform the city centre into a winter wonderland.
Sophie says: “'I’ve loved working on my design for Marwell's Zany Zebras. Brightly coloured, the nostalgic design evokes all the fun of the fair. From the initial design work and production, a summer of fun on the streets of Southampton, followed by a charity auction in aid of Grevy's zebra conservation, Marwell’s Zany Zebras is a wonderful event that I’m very proud to be a part of.”
Kirstie Mathieson, Project Manager for Marwell’s Zany Zebras said: “We are delighted that Sophie has joined the Marwell’s Zany Zebras stampede. The public art extravaganza brings together the whole community to create a very special summer that showcases not only the city of Southampton but also the talents of artists from further afield, all whilst raising vital funds for the Grevy’s zebra and other endangered species.”
